Last Sunday evening, Ballindangan man Jim O’Brien was awarded for his years of investment into the local community, as he received the accolade of East Cork ‘Volunteer of the Year’.

Mr O’Brien was one of a small number of people who were singled out for their selfless work at the annual Cork Volunteer Awards, which took place last weekend in St Peter’s on North Main Street in the city.

The award was given as Ballindangan Community Hall looks forward to celebrating its 50th anniversary this October, and since its inception Jim has been instrumental in keeping the show on the road.

Saying he was there when the foundations went down and from ‘when it was a green field’ in 1973, he acknowledges he played his part in keeping the local hall open, an essential community point for any small village.
