It was around 1980 and Fermoy and Grange Coursing Club held their coursing meeting as usual. After the first round, those present were talking about a brindled, well-bred, fast bitch owned by Andy Shinnick from Rahard, Ballyhooly. Andy had acquired the bitch from his brother-in-law, a Mr Fox from Glanworth and Andy named the bitch ‘Wounded Knee.’

This same Wounded Knee made donkeys of her rivals in the Oaks Trial Stake. I remember the final well. I was alone in the field, halfway between the bookmakers and the slipper's box. I observed Andy walking ‘Wounded Knee’ down from the car park towards the slipper's box. The bookmaker Jo Jo Donnelly from Cork City, a wit, observed Andy too.

Now, Andy had a pain in his knee and was very noticeably lame. Andy and I heard Jo Jo shout: “Is it the dog or the man that has the wounded knee”? to which Andy retorted: “Go 'way, Donnelly.” How did Wounded Knee fare in the National Oaks at Powerstown Park? Did she breed a winner? Did she break 30 seconds on the track?
