A man survived a cardiac arrest on Sunday afternoon in Kilworth after a number of locals performed CPR, a nearby defibrillator was retrieved for use and volunteer first responders reached the scene within minutes.
The immediate intervention of locals proved vital in assisting the man, who became unresponsive in a public house on Main Street. Speaking to The Avondhu this week, Lorraine O’Brien of The Village Inn emphasised the importance of the village defibrillator being so centrally located, as she recalled the man being placed in the recovery position, and then dialling 999.
Despite having never performed CPR, Ms O’Brien followed the emergency call-taker’s instructions and began chest compressions, while locals retrieved the nearest community defibrillator, located less than 100m away across the main street.
