Friday evening last saw the unveiling of a plaque to mark the restoration of the stile entrance to the 'fair field' at Lower Patrick Street, Fermoy.
The event coincided with the final night for trading in one of the town’s best-known pubs, The Elbow Lane Inn.
Many memories flowed at the unveiling of the plaque. Well-known local man John Hanlon, whose family had a long-established victualler’s premises at the corner of Pearse Square (now Fitzgerald's), recalled being at the fairs at three o’clock in the morning and of the thriving business that was carried out there.
There were many present on Friday who recalled happy childhood days at the old fair field, which was the playground for the children of that area of the town …
