Mary Meaney had her day on BBC1

Since Mitchelstown writer Mary Meaney released her book You Can’t Eat Roses Mary, the story of her father Mick has been gaining traction, not only in Ireland, but also further afield. Just last week, Mary featured on The One Show on BBC1 with journalist Angela Scanlon.

Speaking about going to London for the prominent evening talk show on BBC, Mary told The Avondhu that it was ‘very surreal’ to be in Mitchelstown one day and then in the BBC studio the next.

Talking to Angela Scanlon about her father’s experience of being buried alive was also very moving for Mary, as she said it was like reliving his experiences in some ways.

She said that Angela’s interview was very balanced and she really enjoyed it, adding that Angela is married to Roy Horgan from Mitchelstown, so there was also a link between them when they met.

“When my father went to be buried alive, he thought he would go down underground and then come up in life.”

Hoping that he would become world famous, Mary said of her dad: “When my father went to be buried alive, he thought he would go down underground and then come up in life.”

However, this fame was not to last. She hopes now that his story will live on through her book and said that it has been getting very good feedback.
