L-plates increase as Mitchelstown wait times rise

According to new data provided by the Irish Road Safety Authority (RSA) the number of learner drivers on the road increased by 6,219 this year, bringing the overall total to 388,090.

At 42,810, Cork has the second-highest number of learners in the country behind Dublin, while 408 extra learners in Waterford has seen that county’s total rise to 11,008. Limerick’s learners have increased by 346 and Tipperary’s have gone up by 204, bringing their totals to 15,312 and 12,913 respectively.

The Avondhu can reveal that wait times have shot up at the new Mitchelstown Driving Test Centre in the Coolnanave Industrial Estate. After recording one of the shortest waits nationwide last month with just 9 weeks, that number has now risen up to 12 according to the latest CSO figures. In contrast, Mallow has maintained their wait-time of 9 weeks, below the national average of 12.1 weeks.
