The big road cycling event this week is the International Junior Tour of Ireland, which started on Tuesday, July 15 and finishes on Sunday, July 20 and young Fermoy cyclist Carey Hayes is taking part as a member of the Munster team, local supporters wish him well.

The 6-Day Tour is based in Ennis, Co Clare and top class Juniors from abroad will take on the best of the Irish Juniors. The 2013 edition was won by Kanturk Star Eddie Dunbar riding for the Ireland team and he will be back to defend his title.

With no road racing locally this weekend, cyclists interested in an alternative side of the sport will have the All-Ireland Cross Country Mountain Bike Championships in Fossa, just outside Killarney this weekend.

The Hennessy Cycles Summer League continues on Tuesday, with racing starting as usual at Castlehyde at 7.30pm. The League will finish on Tuesday, July 29, with the prize presentation of the nights racing.

Fermoy Cycling Club members did not get in the prizes at the Tralee Grand Prix, although Simon Fox rode very well in the Category 3 race, finishing in 11th place. Former Fermoy cyclist Dave McCarthy now riding with the Nicholas Roche Performance team did finish in an excellent 6th place in the Category 1 race.

Club members are reminded that the Dan O’Donovan Memorial Races will take place in Fermoy on Sunday, August 10 and the usual assistance from everyone would be appreciated on the day.
