News from the Irish Dairy Board (IDB) that the Kerrygold brand of butter is to be manufactured out of a new site in Mitchelstown along with a major packaging plant, is a major lift for the area. Two hundred jobs during the construction phase and 50 jobs once the plant is up and running - that's what every town in Ireland would love to hear.

The new complex will be a major undertaking with a reported €30 million being outlayed. There will be many benefits for the town and hinterland, least of all, the placing of Mitchelstown on the world stage as a the home of the iconic, world-renowned Kerrygold brand. It will also add value to dairy producers locally by availing of synergies with the existing Dairygold complex.

This new development will be a new product development, innovation and customer presentation centre that will be used to showcase the Kerrygold brand to new and existing global customers. It's location is ideal from a local point of view as traffic entering and exiting the plant will do so from the roundabout on the Kildorrery Road - putting no extra pressure on traffic flow in the town, unless that caused by the extra workforce which would be welcome in the town.

An announcement something similar to that above, would be a energising fillip for neighbouring Fermoy. The media exposure Fermoy Ice Cream is enjoying at the moment is welcome, so a progression on the eastern side of town at the mart and Barry's Yard would be hugely positive.
