The OPW are in the process of making the final touches to the Inches Walk in Fermoy before handing it over to Cork County Council, at which point the popular public amenity is expected to reopen.

While indicated in both February and May of this year that the walkway, alongside the River Blackwater in the town, would reopen imminently, numerous delays have left local residents feeling frustrated.

Cllr Noel McCarthy confirmed this week that work on fencing along the walkway which was closed during the now completed flood relief scheme was delayed up until recently. However, these works are expected to be completed within the coming week.

At this point, the OPW will officially hand the area back to the council, who may be required to carry out grass cutting works along the walkway before it can be reopened. Cllr McCarthy commented: “I know there’s a lot of people waiting for this walk to reopen and it’s take far too long, but at least now we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“It’s a fantastic amenity for the town”

“We’ve a few weeks left before the schools are back and the nights begin to shorten, so hopefully the public can maximise the rest of the summer along the walkway,” he said.
