Craig Coady was cleaning his late son Rory’s goldfish tank when the phone call his family had been hoping for finally arrived – after over two years of waiting.
Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, contacted the Lisgriffin father not long after midday on Tuesday to inform him that the HSE had approved reimbursement of Skyclarys, the first treatment authorised for Friedreich’s ataxia.
“I was at home, in the kitchen actually, just keeping myself busy,” Craig told The Avondhu. “Rory had a lovely case of goldfish, and I was just cleaning out the water tank. It was just after midday when I got a phone call from Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, and my legs went from under me because, look, our future was on that call.”
