The cold weather didn’t stop a fine crowd from turning out in New Square, Mitchelstown last Friday afternoon to see the official opening of the Mick Meaney memorial and time capsule.
The permanent monument to the man who was buried alive for 61 days back in 1968 sits on the ground near the Clongibbon House Hotel, and it can safely be said that a more fitting design couldn’t be imagined as it features the Mick’s face peeping up at the viewer from the underground.
Close to 100 people gathered, including many council workers who would have worked with Mr Meaney, who passed away in 2003.
Many on Friday morning knew Mick personally, or remembered the big furore when he completed his record breaking feat.
