Local Shanballymore man Michael Kiely has taken the top spot in the Men’s over-80s 800m race at the World Masters Indoor Championships in Gainsville, Florida in the United States.

With a time of 3:09.35, Kiely showed a true ‘kick’ over the closing stages and finished a full four seconds ahead of runner-up, USA’s Robert O’Rourke, with Jean-Louis Perez from Canada in 3rd in a time of 3:20:04.

An avid runner for over 40 years, Kiely does his training with Mallow Athletics Club. One of his running partners, Mairéad Sheedy, had nothing but admiration for his ability and outlook towards the sport.
