Araglin 2-08 Grange 0-09

Our junior B footballers continued their good run in this year’s Cavanagh’s of Fermoy sponsored division two football league when they had 5 points to spare over Grange in Araglin last Sunday morning.

The victory made it 3 league wins in a row (Deel Rovers, Clyda and Grange) with our only loss being to Glanworth in the opening game. Hopefully, this good run can be extended when we face near neighbours, Kilworth on Friday evening.

Regarding last Sunday’s contest, the goals proved crucial with James Kearney in the right place at the right time to do the needful. The goal after half time in particular was vital in that it gave us a lead that Grange couldn’t claw back.

The always attack-minded, Paddy Kenneally opened the Araglin scoring with a well struck point. Goalkeeper, Mark Hickey was called into action early on when he reacted well to a goal-bound effort. Tom and Dave Browne along with Cain O’Mahony combined to set up Gus, whose low powerfully struck shot had too much for Grange number one, Adrian Tyner. Cain popped up to get our second point and the Ballygiblin hurler was then fouled which resulted in Gus converting the dead ball. (1-03 to 0-01 at this stage).

Vincent then got on the score sheet, which was just reward for all his industry and hard work. Our fifth and final point of the first half was also a pointed free by Gus, 1-05 to 0-2 lead at the break.

Grange had the elements to their backs at the change over and this helped their cause considerably. However, it was a mazy run from Vinny that helped fashion our second goal, just minutes in. He did all the spade work and Gus had the fairly routine task of blasting home Vinny’s rebound from a metre or two out. This goal was a huge score as from then on Grange started to get a foothold around the middle of the park and their attacks grew in frequency as the game wore on.

Grange’s scoring rate upped considerably and defensively we had to work very hard to contain them. Again, John Tobin stood out, he did all the simple things with a minimum of fuss and was always in communication with those around him. When we did break, we linked up well and Cain, who had a fine game got our 6th point – a pointed free from Gus also kept the scoreboard ticking over. We cleared our lines at the expense of several ‘45s’ but Grange couldn’t capitalise. A late point by Gus brought us up to eight points and in a pretty professional manner we saw the game out.
