Cork North West TD John Paul O’Shea has welcomed the return of the Back-to-School clothing and Footwear Allowance payments, with close to four-and-a-half million euro due to be paid to families across Cork.
The payments began last Wednesday, July 15, following an announcement by Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary TD.
The purpose of the allowance is to support eligible families with the cost of school-related clothing as we close in on the new school term.
“The cost of getting children ready for school places a significant financial burden on many families, particularly at this time of year,” Deputy O’Shea said.
“This payment provides real and practical support, helping parents and guardians with the cost of school uniforms and footwear ahead of the new school term.
“I am especially pleased that the scheme has been expanded this year to include children aged 2 and 3. This important change means even more families will receive support when they need it most.”
Across the country, over 126,000 families have already received payments totalling around €48.8 million, covering more than 233,000 children.
Following the inclusion of 2-and 3-year-olds for the first time, the grant is expected to include an additional 37,000 in the scheme.
The payment rates are €160 for children aged 2 to 11, and €285 for children aged 12 and over in second-level education.
Elsewhere in the region, Tipperary received a total of €1,894,100 across 4,803 payments, with Waterford receiving a total of €1,498,080 across 3,919 payments. Limerick received a total of 5,539 payments totalling €752,525.
“This is a significant investment that will make a real difference to families while also supporting local businesses as parents begin their back-to-school shopping,” Deputy O’Shea said.
Applications are currently open until September 30.
“I would encourage any family who thinks they may be eligible to check their entitlement and submit an application. It’s important that every family receives the support they are entitled to.”
