According to figures released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), Ford was the top-selling brand in Ireland’s car and van market for both the month of March and for the first quarter of 2016.

Ford achieved a 12.3% share (3,121 units) of the overall market during the month, followed by Nissan with 11.2% or 2,843 units and VW with 11.1% or 2,811 units.

For the first quarter of 2016, Ford was the brand that sold the most cars and vans with a cumulative sales tally of 11,945 units or 12.3% of the total market.

VW took the second spot in the quarterly charts with 10,848 units or 11.1%, followed by Toyota with 10,281 units or 10.6% of the total market.

Total car and light commercial vehicle sales for the month of March broke down as follows: 21,597 cars (up 14.1% on the March 2015 figure of 18,933) and 3,747 light CVs (up 21.7% on the March 2015 figure of 3,079).

Ford Ireland Chairman and Managing Director, Ciarán McMahon commented. “Ireland’s car and van sales year to date continue on an upward healthy trend with year-on-year increases in car sales of more than 28% and vans jumping by an even more impressive 35%. We are delighted that our vehicles are again the number one choice of Irish car and van drivers.”

The Ford Transit range, following its recent 50th birthday celebrations, held onto its crown as Ireland’s favourite van.

Ford’s van tally during the month of March stood at 1,108 units, more than double the total of its nearest rival, VW with 475 units sold.
