Two years on since Carrignavar lobbied the council to have provision for a new wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for the village included in the County Development Plan, no progress has been made to date to help alleviate related issues within the village.

Unlike Kilbehenny and its current wastewater issues which have been extensively highlighted, Carrignavar does have a WWTP serving the village, however, it’s currently ‘overloaded’ with no extra capacity to allow for development. It’s been branded “a disgrace in the present circumstances where people are looking for houses”.

A key example of the pressure on services within the village can be seen in the development of the new primary school, for which, services from the old school will be transferred once complete, leaving the old school building without any such services.

According to Oliver Manley, chairman of the board of management, the current wastewater treatment plant also takes in stormwater, which is then discharged into the Glashaboy River.
