Maynooth University has unveiled a sculpture of an tAthair Peadar O Laoghaire, a gift from the people of Castlelyons, Co. Cork where the celebrated Irish-language revivalist and literary pioneer served as parish priest for nearly 40 years.
The bronze bust of an tAthair Peadar (1839-1920) who graduated from St Patrick’s College, Maynooth in 1867 and later became one of the leading figures of the Irish Language Revival of the late 19th and early 20th century, is one of two created by the renowned sculptor Seamus Connolly, the second of which stands proudly on the church grounds in Castlelyons.
According to Castlelyons native Padraig O Briain, the story of the Maynooth unveiling began in 2018, when he co-wrote a book on an tAthair Peadar O Laoghaire with Eilis U Bhriain.
