Three Blackwater Community School (BSC) students have reached the regional finals of Junk Kouture, a national competition for secondary level students challenging them to create high-end wearable fashion from everyday junk.
The Transition Year students - Catherine Hennessy, Elly O’Hanrahan and Tamara O’Flaherty, created an outfit - titled Independence - made almost entirely from newspapers, to illustrate independence with an emphasis on the rights of free speech and education.
Speaking to The Avondhu, Catherine described the outfit: “Our model Elly O’Hanrahan, is a warrior with a helmet and pen shaped staff included, fighting for the cause of independence and stressing the importance of recycling at the same time.
“Our school has been a great provider for our recycled supplies. We collected discarded pens and pencils that had been abandoned and broken throughout the building. Our school janitor was very obliging, letting us root through the lost and found box.
”From a total of 959 entries in the South region, the BSC students are among 80 designs to have qualified for the regional finals. The public are now given the opportunity to vote for their favourite design, through the Repak Recycling Facebook page.
“The votes go towards our overall score, which could determine whether we continue to the finals or are sent home,” said Catherine. To vote, visit www.facebook.com/RepakRecycling.
The group will also choreograph a performance to showcase their outfit on the catwalk at the regional finals next month at the University of Limerick. The competition will then be whittled down to just 80 designs from across the four regions for the national finals to be held in the 3Arena, Dublin in April. Best of luck to all involved.
