To the immense relief of teachers, parents and students and after a wait of more than ten years, a site has been chosen for a new school in Fermoy. The site, at Duntahane, is currently being transferred from Cork County Council to the Housing Agency.
Following a lot of lobbying and much pressure, the statement comes after a number of councillors called on the government last week to clarify whether or not a site had been chosen.
Minister of State Sean Sherlock said that as a Minister, he personally shepherded the process that has seen the site secured.
“I have had numerous discussions with county council officials on this matter and I fully intend to see this process through. I have met with the principal and parents separately on this matter,” he said.
“It should also be noted that prior to 2011 (when we entered Government), there was no ‘noise’ from local FF councillors, so much so, that this issue has been ongoing for over ten years, that is, until I stepped into the breach and made sure that the school was put on the Schools Capital Programme”
This decision comes two years after the school was granted funding for a new site due to overcrowding in the current school building.
However, a date as to when construction will begin, has not yet been confirmed.
“The challenge now is to get this project to the planning stage,” Minister Sherlock concluded.
