Monsignor O’Donnell celebrates his Platinum Jubilee

The people of Castlelyons joined with Monsignor James O’Donnell in celebrating his Platinum Jubilee, at a special Mass in St Nicholas Church, Castlelyons last Sunday.

Monsignor O’Donnell is 70th years a priest, having been ordained in 1955; while down-playing his longevity as a cleric, we reliably understand that the Castlelyons native will also celebrate a milestone birthday next week, when he turns 95.

As Monsignor O’Donnell told parishioners in St. Nicholas’ Church last Sunday, his long and eventful life started in Castlelyons. Born one of 6 children to Tom O’Donnell and Mary Kirby in 1931, he grew up in Castlelyons, where he was well versed in rural ways and country pursuits. A keen sportsman, he is comfortable with Limerick’s recent hurling success, as both his parents hailed from the Treaty county.
