Mallow General Hospital has welcomed the first patients to 24 newly-completed single-occupancy inpatient rooms, marking a significant expansion of the hospital’s services and capacity.

These new rooms bring the hospital’s total inpatient capacity from 71 to 95 beds, providing additional space for people requiring admission and supporting improved patient flow across the region.

This latest development further strengthens Mallow General Hospital’s ability to deliver high-quality care in line with Sláintecare principles, ensuring patients can receive appropriate care as close to home as possible.

The increased bed capacity will ease pressures on the acute hospital system and improve access to inpatient services in HSE South West.

COMPLETION OF PHASE 2

“Welcoming patients into these new single rooms is a significant milestone for Mallow General Hospital,” Sonya Cotter, HSE Manager for Cork North and East said. “This expansion allows us to care for more people in a modern, private environment while supporting safer, more efficient care delivery. Increasing our inpatient capacity strengthens our role within the community, which has always been hugely supportive of the local hospital.”

The completion of this phase marks an important milestone in the ongoing development of Mallow General Hospital as a key provider of accessible, high-quality healthcare for the region.

Welcoming the expansion, Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea  said the announcement was ‘a very welcome development for Mallow General Hospital and for patients across North Cork and the wider region’.

“Increasing inpatient capacity and providing modern single-occupancy rooms will make a real difference to patient comfort, privacy, and care.” He continued by saying: “This expansion is fully in line with the Sláintecare vision of delivering care in the right setting, at the right time, and as close to home as possible. It will help ensure patients in our region can access high-quality inpatient services without unnecessary delays or travel.”

The 24 single-occupancy rooms are phase two of a broader extension project. Phase one, completed in 2023, delivered 48 single-occupancy inpatient rooms, significantly enhancing patient comfort, privacy, and infection prevention standards at the hospital.
