Local opposition to the anaerobic digestion facility at Corracunna, Mitchelstown, has led to the formal establishment of the Mitchelstown Biogas Concern Group, set up in response to the recent conditional planning decision by Cork County Council.
The group was formed following the Council’s decision on November 27th to grant conditional planning permission to Nephin Renewable Gas, a move that has brought strong opposition from some residents living in the surrounding area, making an online group that has up to 150 followers.
Speaking to The Avondhu on Thursday, local Corracunna resident and spokesperson for the Mitchelstown Biogas Concern Group, Juliette Joyce, outlined the motivations behind the formation of the group, explaining that while she is not opposed to a renewable energy site, she believes the chosen location is wholly unsuitable, describing the area as a traffic blackspot with significant safety risks.
