It is being speculated that Fermoy may lose anything up to 30 gardai under the new operating model and the loss to the town of the Divisional Headquarters is being viewed as a negative move and a significant blow to the area.
That said, what will compensate in some way for the loss of the Divisional Headquarters is the fact that up to 10 new additional gardaí will be coming to the town very shortly as Fermoy has been selected as the headquarters for a Protective Services Unit.
These new Garda personnel are specially trained to deal with sexual crimes and domestic violence in North Cork.
