Fermoy Tidy Towns have responded brightly to the news that additional CCTV cameras are to be installed in Fermoy, by acknowledging the benefit of CCTV to date.

The group also welcomed the possibility of the cameras being located in the library car park, which they pointed to as a problem area for litter.

Cork County Council announced recently that over €15,000 would be spent on increasing the amount of CCTV cameras in Fermoy, following on from the immediate success of the cameras along Ashe Quay and O’Neill Crowley Quay last year.

The cameras will be located along Patrick Street, MacCurtain Street and Cork Road, while the library car park will be considered if funding allowed.

PRO of Fermoy Tidy Towns, Tadhg O’Donovan welcomed the allocations this week. “It’s exciting times to learn that Cork County Council is contemplating increasing its expenditure at this hour,” he commented.

“While it has been acknowledged to date the benefits of CCTV installation, particularly in the area of crime prevention in the town, it must not be forgotten that those involved in the anti-litter campaign would like to see our efforts greatly enhanced with the introduction of additional CCTV cameras.

“Unfortunately, year in year out, as verified by the inspectorate in the annual Irish Business Against Litter report, it is obvious that areas such as car parks could be greatly improved in the elimination of litter if cameras were to be provided.

“Fermoy Tidy Towns can only hope that if additional cameras are provided they will be located in our car parks, to help us in the fight against litter in our town,” Mr O’Donovan added.
