For long the standard bearer for local communities in the SuperValu National Tidy Towns competition, Coolagown claimed its ninth consecutive Gold Medal and the County Award for achieving the highest score across all of North Cork at the 2016 award ceremony in The Helix, Dublin on Monday.

Coolagown Tidy Towns added an extra four points to their overall score from last year, finishing with a total of 323 points, impressively just three points shy of winning Ireland’s Tidiest Village (won by Birdhill of North Tipperary with 326 points).

In addition, Coolagown received a Value Water Award for their unique Rainwater Harvesting Project, where they are harvesting rainwater from the church roof into a 30,000 litre tank, donated by Micro Bio Fermoy, through 3.1km of pipeline and pumped to 15 taps at various locations throughout the village. A spokesperson for Coolagown Tidy Towns told The Avondhu that they were very pleased with their result this year.

“We were delighted with the result, particularly against such intense competition from all across the country. It is particularly difficult to gain even one point at this level of the competition, so to gain four points was a great achievement for us.”
