Colman’s long and distinguished history recalled

1856 to the present. That was the challenging time span, those writing the history of St. Colman’s College, Fermoy had to take on. A mammoth undertaking by any standard, it called for exceptional scholars and these individuals stepped forward in the shape of James ‘Jim’ Field, Andrew McCarthy and Fr. Robert ‘Bobby’ Forde.

Very regrettably, Fr. Forde didn’t live to see what is an impressive tome, come off the printing press. His colleagues, James and Anthony, were guests of honour at last Friday night’s official launch in the college’s historic Priest’s Library.

‘St. Colman’s College, Fermoy, A History’ was formally launched by Bishop of Cloyne, William Crean. Bishop Crean praised the research and attention to detail that was required to produce what is a definitive history of one of Cork’s most famous secondary schools. He lamented the passing of Fr. Bobby Forde, who he described as ‘a priest intrinsically linked with education and St. Colman’s College in particular’.
