Christy Kearney, pictured after being presented with his award with Fr Donal Leahy, PP Kilworth and Araglin and chairperson Fermoy Brand Irish Red Cross, Maria McSweeney (Cork Area Irish Red Cross), and Sheila Lewis (treasurer Fermoy branch).

Kilworth’s Christy Kearney was one of five Cork people shortlisted for the Irish Red Cross Carer of the Year 2016 award, recently won by Killavullen’s Hilary O’Kelly.

Christy, a well-known figure in the local area, particularly for his past involvement in the construction industry, was nominated for the award as a full-time carer of his wife, Teresa.

The Cork Carer of the Year awards were set up a number of years ago to recognise the important work of carers around the county and honour their dedication and the valuable role they play in the community.

Christy’s son Chris told The Avondhu this week that his father has been caring full-time for his wife with around seven years.
