The CBS Primary, Mitchelstown were celebrating victory recently, as they defeated Dromahane NS in the Roinn A1 Football National Schools' final.

There had been heavy showers earlier in the day but the pitch was in good condition. A swirling wind made good football difficult, but the lads rose to the occasion and played their best football of the year. Their passing was excellent and how they fought for the ball with numerous blockdowns. It was a true team performance with all the players, including subs, doing their job.

From the throw-in they were on the attack. Darragh Flynn sent a free into the danger area where James Coughlan won the ball and was fouled for a penalty. Colin Brenock shot over the bar to settle the team. Jody Finn brought a brilliant save from the Dromahane keeper and from the resulting 45, Aaron O'Brien pointed. Cameron and Jody were putting a lot of pressure on Dromahane and after five minutes, a long ball from Colin into the danger area saw a rushed Dromahane clearance end up in the back of the net.

Darragh won a kick out, soloed and sent over a lovely point. On 15 minutes, James Coughlan won the ball at the edge of the square, rounded the full back and drove the ball to the corner of the net.

Dromahane put on tremendous pressure but again the defence was outstanding. Eoin Kent, captain Sean Howard and Dylan Mulqueen were like a wall on the half back line and turned defence into attack, time and again. At half-time the score was 2-3 to 0-0.

In the second half, Dromahane shot out of the blocks and were determined to make a game of it. However, Troy Millea lorded at full back, given superb support by Cormac and James Crotty. Padraig Sisk did not have a lot to do in goals and his long clearances brought great relief to the defence. Seamus and Darragh worked their socks off.

Aaron carried the ball from midfield to score a great long range point for the opening score of the half. James Coughlan cut in from the corner to score a beauty of a point from a tight angle. Colin added another and Dromahane were getting frustrated but didn’t lie down. Eventually their efforts were rewarded and they got a quick goal and a point.

Mitchelstown did not panic and continued to play attractive football. Paul Fitzgerald burst forward from halfway, sent a low ball to James Coughlan who rounded his man and slammed home for a goal that was almost identical to his first goal. Aaron added a point before Troy Millea got a well deserved point. A long free from Jody was finished to the net by Colin.

Dromahane drove forward and a shot was cleared off the line by Eoin Kent. The ball was worked forward to Paul Fitzgerald who was denied by the save of the match by the Dromahane 'keeper. John Weir used his subs bench and the fresh legs had the desired impact. CBS held out for a famous win on a scoreline of 4-8 to 1-1. Sean Howard was presented with the cup and made a great speech.

The team and school were delighted with the result, but even more delighted with the behavior of everyone on the day. Mr Breen, Mr O’Shea, Mr Maher and Mr Weir deserve great credit for the work they have put in with the team, not forgetting the work put in by others at the school, Paul O’Callaghan and the Mitchelstown/Ballygiblin Juvenile GAA Club coaches.
