St Joseph's Foundation in Charleville which provides invaluable educational opportunities to those with special needs has friends in many places.

These are no fair-weather friends and over the decades they've gone the extra mile and beyond, to assist this fantastic organisation. Their next big undertaking is a 'bay to bay cycle'.

This Saturday will see cyclists from throughout the region complete a one day 230 km cross country cycle from Dublin to Galway. Under the banner of Better Life Cycle, their route will take them through four counties (Dublin, Meath, Westmeath and Galway).

Mitchelstown and surrounding villages are well represented and this week a dedicated committee put the final touches to preparations for this substantial undertaking. The committee comprises: Annette Beston, Anthony Hanrahan, Cathy Walsh, Claire O'Connell, John Walsh, Karl Sweeney, Kieran Caplice, Lisa Sheehan, Martin Sheehan, Mick Beston, Milo O'Connell, Nollaig Baker, Noreen Piggott and Tom O'Flynn.

Assisting the committee are a team of dedicated volunteers who are bracing themselves for a hectic, demanding, energy sapping weekend. The cyclists and their back up team held a meeting in The Firgrove Hotel, Mitchelstown recently where participants were briefed on what to expect. One of the group leaders, John Walsh, said everyone should prepare themselves physically and mentally for a very touch cycle. Expressing himself happy with how preparations have gone, John urged everyone to be confident, positive and to support each other at all times.

A simple text would greatly assist

Members of the public can play their part by simply texting BLC to 50300 - by doing so you are pledging €4 to St Joseph's Foundation.

Those associated with next Saturday's bay to bay cycle have committed countless hours to this project. There is no monetary reward for them, only the satisfaction of knowing their efforts are benefiting the men, women and children who avail of the services provided by St Joseph's Foundation in Charleville.
