Over the past week, the village of Clogheen bore the brunt of a fierce blow with the sudden and unexpected closure of Mulcahy’s Spar on the main street.

The closure has been described by locals as ‘a wicked loss’, as it means that there is now only one grocery shop left in Clogheen

By all accounts, the shop seems to have closed suddenly and the shutters were well and firmly down after the August bank holiday weekend.

PJ English told The Avondhu that they would like to see someone else coming into Clogheen and opening up where the shop used to be.

“There was a big demand for the shop, but the loss of the bank earlier this year was the biggest hit. We still have a lot of things in the village with the chemist, doctors, butchers, hardware shop, pubs and more,” PJ said.

He added that the fruit and veg shop will now be stocking additional grocery shop items.
