A potentially serious incident in the Blackwater River in Fermoy was averted last weekend thanks to the swift actions of a teenage rower.
On Saturday last, as many took the opportunity during the beautiful weather to enjoy a stroll or a picnic along the banks of the Blackwater, an individual ended up in the river some 1.5km upstream from the bridge and found himself unable to return to safety.
A number of rowers from Fermoy Rowing Club happened to be on the water training at the time and 17-year-old rower, Áine O’Mara, came across the man in the water. Thankfully, she was able to assist the man back to the shore.
