A unique decoration presented by one of the crowned heads of Europe to a Mitchelstown-born woman has gone on permanent exhibition in Saint George’s Arts and Heritage Centre.

The Grand Order of the Oak Crown was conferred on Aldine Skinner in 2000, by the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, when she retired as Irish Ambassador and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Luxembourg. The decoration is the highest honour the Duchy of Luxembourg can bestow upon military personnel, civilians and foreigners and is given in recognition of exceptional achievements. As far as is known, Aldine is the only Irish woman to have ever been conferred with the honour.

“We were thrilled when Aldine decided to donate her decoration to Saint George’s a few months ago,” said Bill Power, chairman. “It’s a very special addition to the gradually increasing selection of objects that are on display in the centre”.
