Residents in Glanworth turned out in force on Thursday last as Elizabeth Desmond retired as principal from St Patrick’s NS in the village, having successfully steered the growing national school through many changes during her near 40 year tenure as a valued member of staff.

A special Mass was held in Holy Cross Church to mark the occasion, followed by refreshments in the Community Hall, which was attended by staff, pupils and parents, former principals and teachers, as well as members of the wider community.

Having spent some 39 years at the vibrant national school, with around 12 of those years spent as principal, Ms Desmond’s immense contribution to St Patrick’s NS was recognised as she now moves onto the next chapter in her life. Catriona O’Donovan, who has been teaching at St Patrick’s NS for a number of years, has now taken up the position of principal.
