A series of free guided Heritage Week walks will offer a unique opportunity to explore the rich biodiversity, cultural heritage and environmental importance of peatland landscapes in the Ballyhoura and Galtee regions this August.
Led by experienced facilitators from Nature Network Ireland, in partnership with Ballyhoura Development, the walks form part of the Peatlands and Communities Visioning Project 2026. Participants will discover how peatlands support biodiversity, store carbon, regulate water systems and have shaped the history and identity of local communities.
SATURDAY WALK
The first walk takes place on Saturday, 15th August from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, along the scenic Knockduv Loop in Ballinaboola. Beginning at the Ballinaboola Trailhead (Ballinaboola Car Park), the guided walk will explore the ecological and cultural significance of the peatland landscape within the wider Ballyhoura region, highlighting conservation efforts and the importance of protecting these valuable habitats for future generations.
SUNDAY WALK
The second walk will take place on Sunday, 16th August, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, along the Attychraan Loop Walk in the Galtee Mountains. Meeting at the Attychraan Loop Trail Car Park, Galtee Castle, participants will explore another remarkable peatland landscape, learning about its role in supporting wildlife, storing carbon, regulating water systems and preserving the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Galtee region.
Both walks will combine expert interpretation with guided discussion, offering participants a deeper understanding of these internationally important habitats and their connection to local communities. The events aim to inspire greater appreciation, pride and long-term stewardship of our natural heritage, while showcasing the unique landscapes that make the Ballyhoura and Galtee regions so special.
The walks are suitable for adults with a moderate level of fitness. Participants are advised to wear sturdy walking footwear and dress appropriately for the weather.
