Participants in this year’s Fermoy Regatta started arriving early on Saturday last, 5th July. Slowly but surely, Ashe Quay began to fill up with boats and trailers. Fermoy Rowing Club volunteers, with assistance from An Garda Siochana, kept an eye on this equipment overnight. For those who were out on the water early, it meant an early breakfast, in advance of what was an exceptionally busy day for Fermoy Rowing Club, its members and supporters.
Calm and slightly overcast, last Sunday was ideal for rowing and Ashe Quay/Barnane was a hive of activity from 8am onwards. By mid morning, townspeople and other locals were dropping in to see how things were going. Thanks to good organisation and planning, things were going well.
NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL REPRESENTATION
Thanks to success at Olympic and World Championship level, elite rowing in Ireland is being generously financed by Government. This is viewed as money well spent and the end result is, invariably, Irish rowers returning from major competitions with an assortment of medals.
Thanks to underage development and expert coaching, Fermoy Rowing Club is contributing to Ireland’s success with Alison Bergin, Katie Rice, Aine O’Mahony, Brigid Mahon and Gabriella Nagle, being the latest to represent their country.
