Ballyporeen’s ‘Old Boys National Schoolhouse’ opening part of this year’s ‘Music Maker’ Festival

The newly renovated ‘old National Schoolhouse’ building.

There have been tremendous developments in the village of Ballyporeen over the last number of years, with the Community Council to the fore in planning, fundraising and receiving grants to upgrade and enhance the area.

The Community Council has spent over €600,000 over the last few years and could only have done so with the support of a great community. The Astroturf, walkway and community garden have made a wonderful contribution to life in Ballyporeen village, parish and neighbouring parishes.

The latest project to be completed is the refurbishment of the old boy’s National Schoolhouse. This is a wonderful, historical building where the boys of Ballyporeen and its surrounding town lands received their formative education from 1899, right up until December 2004, when the boys and girls school amalgamated with the completion of Scoil Teampall Toinne. Remarkably over this time period, there were primarily only three Principal teachers: Michéal De Neagh, Larry O’Connor and Nioclás Ó Duinnín. Indeed, Nioclás continued for many years as the new Scoil Teampall Toinne Principal.
