An Ardpatrick teenager has sensationally taken a world champion title in a stunning victory at the Mountain bike downhill championships in Austria.
Seventeen year-old Oisín O’Callaghan has been recording a meteoric rise to the top of his sport over recent years and that promise he had been showing was realised on Sunday when he took the world title.
O’Callaghan blasted down the 2.3-kilometere course, dubbed the ‘Speedster’ as speeds approaching 65 km/h on the rough terrain, finishing ahead of Great Britain pair Daniel Slack and James Elliott to win Ireland’s first ever Downhill world title at the Mountain Bike Championships.
“I don’t think it’s sunk in fully yet, later on I think it will. It’s a bit overwhelming right now,” he said after being awarded the rainbow jersey.
