
Bishop of Waterford and Lismore, Alphonsus Cullinan, expressed ‘deep sadness’ following the announcement that the Cistercian Order in Our Lady of Silence Abbey would not be returning to Mount Melleray.
Following a recent formal vote of the Conventual Chapter, the monastic community decided to relocate to Mellifont Abbey, Co Louth.
“Mount Melleray has been a place of prayer, sacrifice, scholarship, and quiet fidelity since the Cistercians first came to our Diocese in 1833. For generations, the monks have sustained the faith of the people of West Waterford and far beyond. Their chant, their hospitality, their spiritual counsel, and their hidden life of intercession have been a blessing not only to this Diocese, but to the whole Church in Ireland,” Bishop Cullinan said.
