While nationally the unemployment rate remained unchanged between May and June at 7.8%, there was a 5% increase in the number of people signing on the Liver Register in Fermoy during the same period.
Despite the recent rise, the figure of 1,670 people signing on in Fermoy still represents a 15% decrease over the last 12 months.
According to the latest CSO figures, there are 296 less people signing on the Live Register between June 2016 and 2015 – with 908 males and 762 females remaining on the Liver Register. The number of males signing on has fallen by over 20% during this time, against a 7.4% drop in the number of females signing on.
Nationally there were 169,100 people registered as unemployed in June, which represented an annual drop of 1.4%, or 29,800 people. Youth employment rose slightly to 16%, with just over 30,000 people between the ages of 15 and 23 out of work across Ireland.
The unemployment rate for men in June stood at 9.1%, while the rate for women was 6.2%
Economists say that while it is too early to discern any negative effects from Brexit on Irish companies’ hiring decision, they do not expect any significant impact of the pace of Irish employment growth from Brexit at this time.
