‘Town’s superloo – an expensive necessity?

Cork County Council has spent over €139,000 operating Mitchelstown’s only public toilet between 2023 and 2025, collecting just over €5,000 in fees. 

Figures released to The Avondhu under the Freedom of Information Act show that the New Square ‘superloo’ cost €139,160.65 to operate across the three years. 

However, a lowly €5,117.95 was collected during that period from fees, contributing less than 4% towards the costs of operating the automated toilet’s and leaving a net cost of €134,042.70. 

Most recent figures reveal that in 2025, the facility cost €47,512.06 to operate, bringing in €1,677.60 during that time. This is compared with an expenditure of €46,994.80 and an income of €1,204.75 in the previous year.
