Taking steps to address the continued theft of ringbuoys at Knockananig Reservoir in Fermoy, Cork County Council has begun the process of adding tracking devices to a number of ringbuoys at the popular public amenity site.
Water Safety officers in the council have moved to curb the practise of public interference of the life-saving aids following a spike in thefts during the year.
‘It’s mindless, senseless behaviour that we could do without’
The county’s Water Safety Officer Caroline Casey, said the pilot project is designed to deter people tampering with ringbuoys around the county. “If someone were to take the ringbuoy out of the box, I’d get an email saying the ringbouy has been removed. If the ringbuoy was put back in again, say if someone was just checking the ringbuoy, I’ll know because it’ll record that it went straight back in again.”
