The anger being felt in Fermoy at Transport Minister Leo Varadkar's decision not to include the M8 in the list of motorways having their HGV tolls lifted for the month of November is very understandable. Few towns in the country are going through the disruption Fermoy has been subjected to this year.

The parking moratorium in the off-street car parks has been acknowledged as a success and an incentive to steer the many HGVs that could well use the motorway away from the town, could only be good for all sides. After all, when drivers experience the saving and convenience that can be derived from motorway driving, they may well opt to use it on an ongoing basis.

The matter was raised in the Dail this week where Sinn Fein TD Sandra McLellan said it was obvious the town would benefit hugely from it, making a strong case for it to be included in the scheme.

Local companies have admitted their drivers avoid the tolled M8 because they are paying a toll on a very short journey. Various groups and politoicians vow to continue the fight - let's hope they will be successful!
