‘The spirit of Ballygown NS’ retiring after 31 years

Pupils held a guard of honour, held as Mr Hannon closes out his final year at Ballygown NS.

A man who was described as ‘the spirit of Ballygown’ is set to retire from his position as principal of Ballygown NS come August 31st.

John Hannon, who has spent almost his entire career, some 31 years, at the school, will unfortunately not be returning to Ballygown NS in the new school year, with current deputy principal, Susan O’Donoghue, set to take on the reins.

“He’s going to be really missed by the staff. That man would be up all night coming up with ideas of things to do and we’re not sure who will replace his enthusiasm and his big ideas, but he is always welcome to call in for a cup of tea and take training any time he wants, or teach a class,” Ms O’Donoghue told The Avondhu. “He’s been the most amazing boss that you could have and replacing him is not going to be easy”.
