The music stops for Joe Mulcahy

The death on Friday last of Joe Mulcahy who, for several decades, steered the fortunes of The Maurice Mulcahy Orchestra, evoked memories for many of the Garda Dance in The Mayflower.

Or perhaps for those who were lucky enough to have holidayed around the North Kerry area in the the 1960s, of dancing to ‘Maurice Mul’ in The Central Ballroom in Ballybunion where the band held a nine week residency for many years.

Joe, who lived in Ballinwillin, Mitchelstown was the last of the Mulcahy brothers, having been predeceased by Maurice, Dave and Michael, his sisters Lydia and Mary also having predeceased him.

Joe played tenor sax, clarinet and keyboards with the band which was formed in the 1950s.
