Scoil Pol, Kilfinane honours the best of the best

Scoil Pól in Kilfinane has a track record of academic and sporting excellence and this was reflected in their recent awards night.

Scoil Pól in Kilfinane has a track record of academic and sporting excellence and this was reflected in last Friday night's awards.

Special guest was past pupil, Louisa Power, who currently holds the position of Medication Management Inspector with HIQA.

Pupils and their families were welcomed by school principal, Michael O'Hara. Michael said the awards were an opportunity to acknowledge 'the best of the best' and he roundly congratulated the following recipients:

Eimear Weeks (best leaving certificate result); Shauna McLoughlin (best junior certificate result); Sean O'Sullivan (best LCVP result); Sinead Dalton & Eoin McCann (best LCA results); Roisin Tan, Kelsey Hough, Niamh Smith-O'Donnell, Alannah Power & Danielle Magner (1st year students of the year); Michelle Goggin, Shauna Daly, Ciaráin Meade and Rebecca O'Sullivan (2nd year students of the year); Ailbe Kiely (5th year student of the year); Michael John Farrell (TY student of the year); Stephen Cleary (LCA 1 student of the year) and Sinead Dalton & Eoin McCann (LCA 2 students of the year).

Awards for a variety of subjects were also presented: Rebecca O'Sullivan (geography); Eimear Weeks & Rebecca O'Sullivan (French); Eimear Weeks & Rebecca O'Sullivan (English literature); Rebecca O'Sullivan (Irish); Maria Curtin (maths); Bridgette McGrath (history); Fearghal O'Sullivan (construction); Maria Curtin (science), Ailbhe O'Sullivan (IT) and Eimear Weeks (home economics).

A special Duine Díliis Award for someone who made an exceptional contribution to school life went to: Ger Leahy with Dean Brazill winning the Sisters of St Paul Award.

Sports awards - sport features prominently at Scoil Pól with the following receiving prizes for excelling in a variety of disciplines: Darren McCarthy (sports person of the year); Shannon Kinahan (Catherine Healy Memorial Award); Catríona Brazil Carroll, Róisín Tan, Kate Mackessy & Danielle Magner (chess); Brian O'Keeffe, Pádraig Weeks, Tyrone Ryan & Danny Moloney (chess). Dylan Dawson & Katie Hennessy (special sports award).

Gaisce awards went to: Elaine O'Dwyer, Karen O'Brien, Martin Farrell, Eilís O'Connor & Emma O'Mahony. ECDL certificates were presented to: Ailbhe O'Sullivan, Niall Fenton, JoJoe Brazil, Michael Riordan, Katie Critchley, Tara Moloney, Aoife Hanley, Rowena O'Sullivan & Sharon Barrett.

There were two Bank of Ireland sponsored art awards - Lianne Connery (sr.) & Gemma Critchley (jr.). A special presentation was made to retiring school bus driver, Tommy Lane. Assisting with the presentations were: Michael Organ and Sarah Condon.
