Old custom of ‘Dancing at the Crossroads’ resume at Laharn Cross this weekend

The old tradition and historic custom of open-air crossroads dancing will resume at Laharn Cross, Lombardstown, Mallow on Sunday, 31st May.

The return of traditional Irish music and dance is eagerly anticipated by many as another summer season of entertainment gets underway in the heart of north Cork.

Situated on the foot of Baelic Mountain, Laharn Cross is the location where people gather each and every Sunday night throughout the summer months from 8pm-10pm. For those unfamiliar with the area, the nearest Eircode is P51N726.

Large crowds will once again step it out on the raised timber platform to dance the night away to live music from some of the best-known entertainers on the traditional dancing circuit including Denis, Christy & Marino Sound, Peter Lane & Blackwater Sound, Ger Healy ‘The Singing Jarvey’, Eddie Lee and many more.

Waltzes, quicksteps, foxtrots, not to mention polkas, Shoe the Donkey and the Siege of Ennis, will be the order of the evening for the hundreds of enthusiastic dancers who gather for two hours of music and dancing at this historic crossroads, renowned by dancers throughout Munster and beyond.

FREE ADMISSION

Mary P. O’Sullivan, chairperson of Laharn Community Action CLG, said that “everyone is welcome and admission is free, though we do ask people to support us through our donation boxes which help cover the cost of the live bands and upkeep of the facilities.”

If the weather is unfavourable on any Sunday evening, the dancing will move indoors to Laharn Heritage Centre, located approximately one kilometre from Laharn Cross.
