Limerick City and County Council has launched a new online platform – Trees.Limerick.ie – which allows all new tree planting across Limerick city and county to be recorded.
The website invites any individual, group, business or community to register all tree planting across the city and county. By enabling people to record where and when trees are planted, the new site will help track progress, celebrate local action and support informed planning for climate action, biodiversity protection and sustainable development.
Everyone is encouraged to take part by recording newly planted trees – whether marking a special occasion, contributing to a community project or supporting a more sustainable future.
Planting the Seeds of Sustainability
Limerick City and County Council promotes tree planting as a key measure to strengthen communities, build environmental sustainability and increase climate resilience.
The website launch is strongly supported by the Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, who has set out a clear ambition in the Limerick Mayoral Programme 2024 – 2029 seeking to reach a target of at least one tree to be planted for every citizen in Limerick.
Mayor Moran commented: “My ambition to plant at least one tree for every citizen of Limerick during my mayoral term is well known. While it’s an ambitious target, I believe it’s the right one to improve our air quality, our biodiversity and our wellbeing. I encourage everyone in Limerick to support this initiative.”
Trees are vital to life on Earth and help regulate the climate and maintain ecological balance, purify air and water, prevent soil erosion; intercept rainfall and return moisture to the atmosphere and also provide essential food and shelter for a huge range of species.
