Expanded 2026 pilot widens eligibility as Ballyhoura Development recruits now for community-based roles
Ballyhoura Development is encouraging people across the Ballyhoura region to apply now for a limited number of places on the Rural Social Scheme (RSS) following a new 2026 pilot expansion designed to open the scheme to more rural residents.
A key change under the pilot is that rural dwellers aged 50 and over, who are in receipt of a qualifying social welfare payment, may now be eligible to apply even without a herd number or farming connection.
The expansion is designed to open the Rural Social Scheme to more people living in rural communities who may benefit from flexible part-time work while also supporting valuable local services and community projects.
RSS placements involve 19.5 hours per week and can include: Administration support for community organisations; Environmental and village enhancement projects; Caretaking and maintenance roles; and community support initiatives.
END OF MAY DEADLINE
There is currently strong demand for both outdoor environmental roles and administration-based placements throughout the Ballyhoura area. Ballyhoura Development is urging interested individuals to make contact as soon as possible, as places are limited and must be filled by the end of May. Any unfilled places may be allocated to other areas nationally.
The scheme may also be suitable for: Rural dwellers aged 50+ on a qualifying payment; People aged 25+ with a defined connection to farming or fishing, including farm labourers; Spouses or partners actively engaged in farming or fishing who are in receipt of a qualifying payment.
However, Ballyhoura Development is encouraging anyone unsure about eligibility to simply get in touch directly, as a short phone call can quickly determine whether they may qualify.
For many participants, the Rural Social Scheme offers more than part-time employment. It provides an opportunity to stay active, build confidence, learn new skills, meet people and make a meaningful contribution within their own community.
While some roles may benefit from computer or administrative experience, Ballyhoura Development says reliability, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are equally valued.
Community and voluntary organisations, charities and social enterprises across the region are also encouraged to contact Ballyhoura Development if they require support through RSS placements, including administration assistance, caretaking or community enhancement work.
