Medical emergency in Castletown’ highlights importance of community defibrillators

The importance of readily available and serviced defibrillators in the community was never more evident than on last wekeend, when at Castletownroche GAA club grounds on Sunday, their life-saving equipment was called into use.

While hosting the Cork Premier Senior Hurling Championship game between Kanturk and Midleton, there was a medical emergency declared at the grounds when a spectator suddenly fell ill. The game was called off as those on site took to his aid immediately and emergency services were contacted.

Luckily, two doctors were among those attending the match, Dr Mike Thompson from Midleton and Dr Brian O’Connell from Kanturk, who, with the help of the on-site defibrillator, saved the man’s life.
