Proud Kilworth native Mattie O’Sullivan, who has long since been domiciled in Mitchelstown, was more than surprised recently when he got a call that a trophy bearing his name and emblazoned with the wording ‘The Mattie O’Sullivan Perpetual Cup – Kilworth Youth Club – 1969’ had turned up in Youghal.
It came about when Liam Howard got a call from his good friend and fellow drama lover, Sean Aherne from Dungourney, saying his brother-in-law and Fermoy native Sean Meehan, had come across the Cup.
Mattie explained that he had donated the cup to Kilworth Youth Club which was very active in the 1960s, for a drama competition.
“Mick Twomey directed a play when we organised a drama competition. Four teams entered and Fermoy won. Sean Meehan was in the Fermoy play and it’s great to think the cup survived until now,” Mattie said, adding that while it isn’t of any great monetary value, it brings back great memories from that time.
